Creating a New Normal

In the face of loss whether it is financial, emotional, or physical we as human beings tend to stay stuck wanting what used to be and keep holding on to the idea and most of the time it is not reality. Unless we become aware of that we will not be able to let go of the old expectation and be open and ready to receive the new opportunity. Few tips to help through the period of adjustment whether it is death of a loved one, financial loss or a move.

  • Stick to a new routine.
  • Avoid new projects.
  • Do not make major or impulsive decisions.
  • Set realistic goals and focus on what you need to achieve.
  • Identify what is working and start eliminate what is not.
  • Clear your plate, prioritize. Simplify your time and stick with what you are good at. Enough rest and relaxation as you settle in the new situation.
  • Acknowledge the change.
  • Accept the ups and downs, emotional roller coaster is normal and will decrease, its effect by time.
  • Live the limbo, differentiate between what you can control and what is uncontrollable.
  • Be courageous and perceptive enough to get help if you need it.
  • Remember you are NOT alone.
  • Give your self- time to adjust to this major change. Do not expect normal responses in an abnormal different circumstances.
  • Recall past triumphs.
  • Take a breather, pamper yourself, exercise, healthy eating, journaling (constructive way to diffuse stress and manage loss or change specially if you want to keep these feelings to yourself).
  • Express gratitude
  • It is a process of saying goodbye to the old and embracing the new normal and do not forget to be compassionate to yourself.
